Shaping The World We Need. Together.
Welcome to the Sun Valley Forum!
We’ve missed connection, inspiration and having the chance to spark new partnerships and strategies, and look forward to a wonderful few days together.
We gather when the devastating war on Ukraine, the pandemic, and the already visible harms from climate change have surfaced the dangerous consequences of our unsustainable, inequitable and insecure world. We are called to take action.
Powered by an ambitious, courageous and compassionate community of participants, the Sun Valley Forum has a record of catalyzing and accelerating impact. We will leverage the Forum to activate solutions for right now and for the rest of this Decisive Decade and beyond. Gathering diverse perspectives from near and far and across generations, we will rapidly grow resilience for all communities and economies, holding each other accountable for the ambition and results of our collective action.
We are pleased to present our 2022 program for us to go far, fast, together.

SUNDAY JUNE 5, 2022
5-7:30PM: YOUTH V. GOV @ SILVER CREEK ROOM, LIMELIGHT HOTEL; FREE PUBLIC FILM SCREENING
Vic Barrett, Kelsey Juliana; Christi Cooper, Director, Producer, Writer; Olivia Ahnemann, Producer
YOUTH v GOV is the story of the Juliana v. The United States of America constitutional lawsuit and the 21 American youth, ages 14 to 25, who are taking on the world’s most powerful government. Since 2015, the legal non-profit Our Children’s Trust, has been representing these youth in their landmark case against the U.S. government for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, personal safety, and property through their willful actions in creating the climate crisis they will inherit.
As leaders in the youth climate movement, the twenty-one plaintiffs of Juliana v. The United States of America represent the diversity of American youth impacted by the climate crisis. They hail from 10 states: Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Louisiana, and New York. These film characters encompass cultural, economic and geographic diversity and many come from marginalized communities, serving as beacons of hope for those who do not have a platform to share their own stories. They are African-American, Indigenous, white, bi-racial, and LGBTQ, and their diversity speaks not only to the impacts of climate change, but to the inclusion required if we are to build a better and more just future together. These young people are activists, students, artists, musicians, and farmers, and their stories are universal.

9:40AM: BUILDING THE WORLD WE NEED: TRANSFORMING ENERGY
Due to rapidly falling prices of clean energy and the demand for climate smart energy systems that are clean and secure in the face of disasters, the world has been rapidly shifting to more localized, cleaner, and more resilient energy systems. Solar photovoltaics is the fastest growing source of energy with 139 GW of global capacity added in 2020, and many nations - and auto companies - have announced the end of the internal combustion engine. The war on Ukraine has wrought devastation on the people and places of that nation. It has also brought new life to the oil industry, which has recently announced the development of assets that previously were unattractive due to low oil prices, but are now moving forward with new infrastructure that may lock in another 20-30 years of production and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Hear from public sector policymakers and from private sector innovators, energy developers and advocates about how we can accelerate the transition to a clean, resilient energy future, to electric transportation, to electric homes and buildings, and to clean, safe and secure sources of energy, with the solutions that are working and how we can replicate and scale them around the world.

From rural regions in the United States and emerging markets to urban centers, food and agriculture can be an engine for opportunity. Hear from the innovators, experts and leaders who are transforming our food system for health, security and our climate – and better tasting food!

Global policymakers, insurers and investors are increasingly recognizing the vast risks from climate change and are changing regulations and insurance and asset management strategies as a result. It is estimated that ten of 2021's most extreme weather events caused a total of $170.3 billion in damage globally. Earlier this year, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced new rules requiring corporations to disclose climate risk so that investors have the information they need. At the same time, over $170 trillion in assets have committed to “net zero” investing by 2050 to align with the Paris climate agreement and leverage strategic investment opportunities. There is an urgent need for an all-of-society mobilization for just and equitable climate solutions across this country. This talk will explore why an all-of-society climate action infrastructure is needed and what it might look like. Join Frank Niepold in this Spark Talk to hear how climate empowerment can provide an urgently-needed “middle-out” strategy to accelerate climate action.
